MiraDry® from Portland’s The Waldorf Center offers a simple, nonsurgical solution for anyone tired of soaking shirts, constant applications of antiperspirant, and otherwise dealing with an excess of underarm sweat.

The treatment is cleared by the FDA to destroy sweat and odor glands, preventing them from further contributing to the problem of hyperhidrosis. Results are noticeable right away, and destroyed sweat glands don’t grow back, so the benefits are lifelong.

WHAT IS MIRADRY®?

MiraDry® is a non-invasive procedure that precisely delivers controlled electromagnetic energy to the underarm areas where sweat glands are located. These glands are damaged with heat, effectively shutting them down, while the upper layers of skin are protected.

WHY CHOOSE MIRADRY® FOR HYPERHIDROSIS IN PORTLAND?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition associated with excessive sweating and can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life. It can be brought on due to several factors such as hot weather, anxiety, exercise, and spicy foods—or even other types of chronic medical conditions. The sweating can affect the entire body, but for some people it only occurs on specific areas. Some of the most common areas that are affected include the armpits, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, face, and chest.

Patients struggling with hyperhidrosis are often fed up with the expense of deodorant and other topical, temporary remedies for excessive sweat. They often also cite the embarrassment of frequently visible wet spots and the discomfort of chafing due to damp clothes. The struggle of coping with hyperhidrosis can often lead to depression and anxiety.

The miraDry® treatment destroys the glands responsible for both moisture and odor—so both moisture and odor are reduced after a session. With miraDry®, there are no incisions or sutures, so there is no downtime necessary for recovery. The hyperhidrosis treatment is handled in the office, and you can return to your daily activities afterward.

YOUR MIRADRY® CONSULTATION

A miraDry® treatment at Portland's Waldorf Center can help with both the moisture and smell related to underarm sweat glands.

Not only does miraDry® at Portland’s Waldorf Center disable the glands that produce moisture, it also works to stop odor-producing glands. The result is a reduction in sweat—and its related smell.

At The Waldorf Center, our team puts a high priority on ensuring patients are well informed about the details of their chosen treatment. You will receive a thorough consultation that allows us to understand your unique concerns and condition, as well as explain what miraDry® can do for men and women experiencing hyperhidrosis. You are encouraged to ask any questions necessary for you to feel comfortable with your decision to move forward with treatments for hyperhidrosis.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MIRADRY®?

We recommend that you shave both underarms four to six days before having miraDry®. Don’t wear any deodorant the day before your appointment. The procedure will last for one hour on average, and we recommend that you wear clothing with loose arm holes such as a tank top, sports bra, or camisole that will allow the treatment area to be accessed easily.

THE MIRADRY® PROCEDURE

Hyperhidrosis treatment begins with the application of a customized temporary template to your underarm area, which will guide the miraDry® device operator. The targeted area will also be numbed to dull sensation. Once in position and activated, the hand-piece will draw the tissue upward, pulling the skin and unwanted glands close. As the surface is kept cool, energy is delivered deeper into the skin as heat, which damages the sweat glands.

You can go home once your hyperhidrosis treatment is finished. Since the glands are damaged during the session, they will cease to produce sweat from that moment on. Results are noticeable after a single treatment, though some patients may find that multiple treatments are necessary to get their ideal results.

WHAT ARE RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE LIKE FOLLOWING A MIRADRY® TREATMENT?

There is little to no downtime needed after a miraDry® session, and you can go home or resume your regular activities once your hyperhidrosis treatment is finished. Since the glands are damaged during the session, they will cease to produce sweat from that moment on. In most cases, patients can start exercising again within a few days after miraDry®.

The most common side effects are mild, temporary swelling, numbness, bruising, and sensitivity in the underarm area for a few days. Applying ice packs to your skin right after the treatment and continuing to do so for the next few days can help to reduce some of the side effects. Non-prescription anti-inflammatory medications can also help with the swelling. Keep the treatment area clean with water and a mild liquid soap while also applying an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to prevent infections. Avoid shaving or applying antiperspirant or deodorant for several days, wait a few days before resuming strenuous exercise, and wear loose clothing to prevent irritation.

WHAT ARE RESULTS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM MIRADRY®

The sweat-reducing effects will be noticeable after a single miraDry® treatment, though some patients may find that multiple treatments are necessary to get their ideal results. One of the advantages of miraDry® is that the results it provides are instant and long-lasting. Most patients will notice a significant reduction in sweat, hair, and odor after just one treatment.

The underarm sweat glands impacted by miraDry® at Portland’s Waldorf Center are a tiny fraction of the body’s total.

Disabling underarm sweat glands with miraDry® at Portland’s Waldorf Center still leaves 98 percent of the body’s sweat glands functioning as they should, making the treatment as safe as it is effective.

Note that there are about two million sweat glands located all over the body, with only two percent of them sitting in the underarm area. Destroying the glands there will not significantly impact your body’s ability to cool itself, as there will still be millions to handle temperature regulation.
