Although there’s no “normal” way for the labia to look—as vaginal lips come in all shapes and sizes—people sometimes want this surgery for cosmetic reasons or to help reduce physical discomfort associated with overly large labia, such as chafing. See below for a basic guide to what you can expect from labiaplasty in 2024 and beyond.

WHAT IS LABIAPLASTY?

Factors such as aging, pregnancy, childbirth, weight fluctuations, and genetics can cause excess or loose skin on the vaginal area, which some people consider to be aesthetically displeasing. This excess tissue can also interfere with function or cause physical discomfort when certain types of clothing are worn.

Why would someone get a labiaplasty? What is the purpose of a labiaplasty? These are some of the most searched for vaginal rejuvenation-related questions. Even though people may have heard the name before, many do not know what the procedure actually involves. Labiaplasty is a discreet plastic surgery procedure designed to minimize the labia minora (the skin that covers the vaginal opening and clitoris). The procedure can sometimes involve reducing the tissue of the labia majora (outer lips) as well.

This surgery often focuses on ensuring that the tissue of the labia minora does not protrude outside of the labia majora, creating a more “tucked in” appearance. It can also have the benefit of addressing any damage to the labia that has occurred during vaginal deliveries and help to restore the appearance of the vaginal lips.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LABIAPLASTY?

Potential patients might also be wondering, “What qualifies you for a labiaplasty?” or “Who is a candidate for labiaplasty?”

Individuals who are experiencing aesthetic or functional concerns related to elongated or sagging labial skin will typically be good candidates for labiaplasty. If you are a smoker, have unrealistic aesthetic expectations, or are suffering from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), you might not be an ideal candidate for labiaplasty. Smoking can lead to increased wound breakdown and infection after surgery. This treatment is also not designed as a solution for low libido.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A LABIAPLASTY CONSULTATION?

Since labiaplasty is such an intimately personal surgery, we at the Waldorf Center want to ensure that each woman considering the procedure has all of her questions answered and is fully informed about what it involves. Dr. Waldorf will conduct a consultation with professionalism and compassion, using the time for an examination and discussion intended to increase a patient’s understanding of the specifics, as well as confidence in the choice.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE FOR LABIAPLASTY SURGERY INVOLVE?

During the labiaplasty surgery, your surgeon will remove excess tissue from the labia minora, which may have been causing pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. This procedure is also often desired by women who feel that their labia have become stretched as a result of childbirth or age. The surgery is sometimes called labia rejuvenation or labial reduction.

Your surgeon will customize your surgical plan based on your anatomy and the results you want. The surgery can involve several different types of surgical techniques, depending on the specific needs of the patient. The procedure usually takes about one hour. The labia are trimmed per your specifications, and absorbable stitches are used to close the incisions. In some cases, fat grafting to the labia is indicated. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.

WHY CHOOSE THE WALDORF CENTER FOR PLASTIC SURGERY FOR LABIAPLASTY?

Dr. Kathleen Waldorf has been in practice for more than 20 years, during which she has performed numerous successful labiaplasty procedures for Portland-area women—and all our staff is sensitive to the specific needs and concerns of women seeking this procedure.

WHAT DOES RECOVERY FROM LABIAPLASTY INVOLVE AND WHEN WILL YOU SEE RESULTS?

The next thing you might want to know is, “How long does labiaplasty take to heal?” You can return to work and other light activities within one to two weeks, and we will give you a peri bottle to rinse the incision areas. There will be some swelling, tenderness, and discomfort, but these symptoms are generally mild. If necessary, you can manage any pain with medication.

Avoid strenuous activity, sexual intercourse, and the use of tampons for a period of four weeks after your surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with full post-operative instructions. The results will be visible right away, as well as lasting—though natural aging, pregnancy, and childbirth can affect the tissues there in new ways.

WHICH COSMETIC PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE ASIDE FROM LABIAPLASTY?

Along with labiaplasty, The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery provides a complete range of surgical, non-surgical, and medical day spa or medispa treatments. We offer various forms of cosmetic surgery to enhance the body, face, and breasts. Breast surgeries—such as breast augmentation, which increases the size and fullness of the breasts, breast lift to give the breasts a perkier and more youthful appearance, and breast reduction to reduce the size of large breasts—are available. A tummy tuck will address loose, sagging skin, stretched muscles, or excess fat to give you a slimmer and flatter abdominal area if you’re concerned about changes caused by pregnancy or aging. A Mommy Makeover involves several types of plastic surgery to address changes caused by pregnancy.
