Botox ®

Some wrinkles in our face are caused by the repeated contraction of our facial muscles. Botox® is a medication that causes a temporary paralysis of the specific muscle into which it is injected. The effect usually takes 5 to 7 days to reach its full effect and patients often seek re-treatment after 3 to 10 months.

The most common areas treated are the muscles between the eyebrows, the crow's feet (laugh lines around the eyes), and the forehead. Other muscles in the face are sometimes treated for specific reasons, such as creases around the mouth or depressed corners of the mouth, but these are less common. In some patients the vertical bands in the neck can also be treated.

The treatment involves injecting a small amount of Botox® into the muscle that is creating the unwanted wrinkles. There is some mild discomfort during the injection, which resolves within seconds of the completion of the injection. Rarely there is some mild bruising. Generally speaking, this is a very safe, non-operative method to create a more youthful look to the face.
