Breast Enhancement
(also known as breast augmentation, breast implants, mammaplasty)
Breast augmentation is a common procedure to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of a woman's breasts. Women with small or underdeveloped breasts are good candidates for this type of procedure. After pregnancy, women often find they have lost breast volume and may elect to undergo a breast augmentation procedure to restore volume. Some women turn to breast augmentation to correct physical malformations, such as, tubular breasts.
A breast implant is used for most breast augmentation procedures. At our center we use FDA-approved implants. This implant may be filled with silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline. Typically, a small incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest, or at the junction of the areola and breast skin (where the color changes). The implant is placed through this small incision, usually under the muscle, and centered beneath the nipple. Dissolvable stitches are used to close the incision. Recovery is relatively quick and most women find they are able to resume a regular work or home schedule in a week.
